Tips for Maintaining Your Home

Protect Your Pipes: What NOT to Flush

Keeping our plumbing systems clear is a team effort! To avoid costly clogs, backups, and emergency repairs, do not flush the following items—even if the packaging says “flushable”:

  • ❌ Sanitary pads or tampons

  • ❌ Baby wipes or “flushable” wipes

  • ❌ Paper towels or cleaning wipes

  • ❌ Diapers or incontinence products

  • ❌ Cotton balls, swabs, or dental floss

Only toilet paper should be flushed. Everything else goes in the trash.

💡 Tip: If you’re ever unsure, throw it away—don’t flush it!

If you notice slow drains, gurgling toilets, or any backup, submit a work order right away.

Fall Home Maintenance Tips: Get Ready for Winter

As the temperatures drop, taking a few steps now can help you protect your home, stay safe, and save on energy costs this winter. Here are some quick tips:

  1. Check Your Windows & Doors

    • Look for drafts and report any broken seals or gaps to maintenance.

    • Use curtains or weather‑stripping to keep the warmth inside.

  2. Prepare Your Heating System

    • Change your furnace filter if accessible.

    • Make sure vents are clear of furniture or rugs for even heating.

  3. Protect Your Pipes

    • Keep your home warm to prevent pipes from freezing.

    • Open cabinet doors under sinks on very cold nights to let warm air circulate.

  4. Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

    • Safety first! Notify maintenance if batteries need replacing.

  5. Outdoor Readiness

    • Remove any items from porches or around the home that could be damaged by snow or ice.

    • If you notice drainage issues or leaks, report them before the first snow.

  6. Plan for Storms

    • Keep a small supply of bottled water, flashlights, and blankets handy in case of power outages.

    • Make sure HHCDA has your current contact information for weather and emergency notifications.

If you notice any issues—like drafts, leaks, heating concerns, or safety hazards—please submit a work order right away. Our maintenance team is here to keep your home safe and comfortable.
